Porsche Boxster / Cayman: Built for a Life in the Middle of Sport
The Porsche Boxster is a roadster that is fully geared towards sport. Nevertheless, it masters the challenge of being suitable for everyday use with flying colours. It follows in the footsteps of the Porsche 550 Spyder, which as a racing car in the early 1950s propelled many drivers to the winner's podium. Some see the Boxster or Cayman as a cheaper version of the 911.
The Boxster's trademark is the classic mid-engine Boxer. The advantage of this is that the Boxster has a boot at the front and rear. This makes it very suitable for everyday use. The Boxster is a two-seater without a fixed roof with a low seating position, a true Porsche roadster. This is where its name comes from, a combination of the "Boxer" engine and the term "Roadster".
In its second generation, the Porsche Cayman was added. The agile and nimble Cayman is built on the basis of the Boxster, but as a coupé. All vehicles have rear-wheel drive. Both models were produced at the beginning of their journey with a 2.5L V6 boxer engine. This was water cooled and produced 204hp. The newer models of the Porsche Boxster and Porsche Cayman are more than well equipped for the track or the road with up to 420hp.
In 1996, the Porsche Boxster began its journey, living up to the adrenaline-fuelled genes of a Porsche. The first generation was called the Porsche Boxster 986 and was equipped with 204hp, a lot for those days. This series was built until 2004 and had a whopping 260 hp in the Boxster S 986 at the end.
The second generation, the Porsche Boxster 987, was produced and sold from 2004 to 2012. It wasn't much different to its predecessor, which was often criticised, but there were some visual changes in the direction of the Porsche 911. The fastest model was the Boxster 987 S, with a total of 310hp. Based on the second generation, the Cayman 987 Coupé was built from 2005 to 2013. The firm body provides more agile, precise handling, making the Porsche Cayman perceived as the sportier car of the two.
The Porsche Boxster 981 is the third generation, with a new aluminium hybrid body shell, which is much lighter. Together with the extended wheelbase, the Boxster became even sportier than before. A true racing car from Porsche, developed for the road. It was built from 2012 to 2016. From the Boxster 981 onwards, there were the Boxster GTS and Boxster Spyder versions. The latter came with a remarkable 375 hp. One year later, from 2013 to 2016, the Cayman 981 was produced. This came with slightly more horsepower than the Boxster 981 and the Boxster Spyder was replaced by the Cayman 981 GT4 with 385hp.
The current generation of the Porsche Boxster and the Porsche Cayman got a new name addition. From now on the models are called 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. This is based on the Porsche 718. The 718 was a successful sports car for the racetrack from 1953. It won many victories and the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman are to continue this success story, new and improved. Instead of a V6 engine, a four-cylinder engine has now been fitted, upgraded with a turbocharger. The two models will be produced from 2016 and are called 718 Boxster 982 and 718 Cayman 982. In the smallest version, the engine produces a stable 300hp. The fastest is the 718 Boxster Spyder on par with the 718 Cayman GT4 with a blistering 420hp.
The two cars are available in different versions. Like the Boxster / Cayman S, T, R, GTS or GTS 4.0. The Porsche Boxster still has the Spyder and the Porsche Cayman the GT4. All models have one thing in common: to master the concentrated sportiness of these racing cars for the road, only original Porsche Boxster rims and Cayman rims come into question!
